Anchoring Bias

One quick change that can immediately improve interview quality – Score candidates independently before you compare notes.

At the end of interviews, it’s really easy for one confident voice to anchor everyone else’s opinion. The hiring manager says “I thought X was great” and suddenly everyone agrees, and any uncertainty gets glossed over, because it just feels easier.

This is called anchoring bias. It’s one of the most common reasons teams hire the wrong person.

Instead: have everyone write their score down before the debrief, then say it out loud at the beginning.

You’ll be surprised how different the views are and the conversation that follows is far more useful than a room full of nodding heads.
What one person misses, someone else catches. That’s how you can make a confident decision.
